The new conferences – web enabled

I visited eComm in Amsterdam last week – a conference on emerging communication with a high-paced information packed program. I enjoyed it but afterwards reflected a little bit on how internet ‘backchannels’ are changing the way we experience these conferences.

A couple of years ago, when twitter was still very young, Mobile Monday in Amsterdam used a twitter backchannel that was projected behind the speaker. I loved it although I can imagine as a speaker it’s actually less so (especially when people tweet that what you are saying is nonsense or make jokes that make the audience laugh while you have no clue). I started appreciating it even more later when it allowed me to follow conferences while being at my desk in the office, without visiting the conference itself (perfect in combination with a live video feed).

Now at eComm there were several backchannels; of course people used twitter for which I set up a search in tweetdeck, but we also used Google Wave at this conference and a public Skype chat/channel for eComm. I followed them and participated in all.

And man!….was that exhausting. Switching between the channels, reacting, tweeting, listening and watching all at the same time while also making notes on my pc. It was too much!! I had a hard time actually following the people in front of me on stage.

It made me think about the backchannel phenomenon. On the one hand it is great and supplies non-visitors with a way to follow what’s happening but making notes and looking at the backchannel does distract from the most important thing; the presentations / demo’s etc themselves!

Maybe it’s time for a backchannel aggregator to read comments and a automatic transcription of things that are being said and get some time back to actually listen :) I’ll be the first customer!

My iPhone as mobile television

Since I bought my iPhone last April I have been playing extensively with new apps and trying out dozens of podcasts. I cannot express how much I love this device and would almost (not totally ;) ) say it has become an expansion of my body; I have it around and in use constantly.

But not only has it become an extension of myself – even more it has become an expansion of my television; or maybe I should say visual media consumption; I actually don’t watch that much television in the traditional way any more; only the news in the evening, sometimes sports and maybe a cool series (like Flash Forward which I’m following now). And even there I turn to the web more and more (50% of FlashForward episodes I watched via the web at a time that suited me better). Most of my video/visual consumption is now online or on a DVD.

With more and more podcasts being video, and some real quality video’s being published as podcast I have noticed that I’m using my iPhone more and more as my viewing device. I regularly watch TED.com video’s, the Onion news or even episodes of ‘Lost’ on my iPhone while commuting to or from work, while travelling or in the evening in bed before I go to sleep. All in all it has become my mobile TV.

Now when I was travelling in Korea and Japan in 2007 I spotted many people watching television on their mobile phone. With mobile television launched in some countries I still have to spot the mobile TV viewers in Europe or the US (I’m sure they’re out there though…somewhere…hidden). Maybe iPhones and Android phones will be the enablers of mobile TV here, although more in a time-shifted way as my current usage on my phone.

If anyone has interesting suggestions for good podcasts or Youtube channels to watch on my iPhone – please leave them in the comments section; I will reward the best suggestion (if there is more than 1 person submitting by November 30th) with a Apple Store voucher of 5 euro!

eBay selling 65% of Skype

The big news this week for me was the sale of 65% of the Skype shares by eBay. Good news for Skype I think - it will take some pressure off that comes with being part of a listed company. And the investors that have bought the 65% seem to be a really great group of people with a lot of experience, knowledge and vision to support Skype's growth.

It's a mixed end for eBay; I think they were under so much pressure from the general analyst and media mood on the skype acquisition which only a sale could solve. On the other hand they say goodbye to one of their growth engines. I feel it's smart that they have kept the 35% and will make a very nice gain on that when they sell that in a couple of years.

There was a lot of blogging coverage - I felt the following two were interesting enough to mention; Michael Arrington's post after the sale was confirmed and the New York times analysis by Joe Nocera which I found interesting.

It has been more than 20 months since I've posted on this blog - so I'm guessing I've lost all or most of the few souls that did visit here. Nevertheless I'll re-boot and start writing again; about ecommerce, innovation, trends and online marketing - but also about communications, futurology, social media and anything else that interests me.

I'm thinking of giving the blog a new name, moving to Wordpress and giving a total overhaul - but I'll just start by putting words back on the page.

I'll continue to blog in english - any dutch readers will be able to understand I assume and will of course open up my thoughts and ideas to a wider audience.

Let's see where we'll get from here....

Dealbundle for sale

I just received an email from socialshopping site dealbundle. Unfortunately the technology company behind dealbundle, r3interactive.com, will not continue to run the platform and is planning to sell it via eBay starting monday december 10th. I wrote about social shopping services on dekoopman.net and I think it is unfortunate that this one apparently did not really pick up.

Maybe interesting for a webenterpreneur? I will post the link to the eBay sale as soon as it is available.

Skype launches beta version 3.5

Skype launched a new beta version today. This version 3.5 solves some little bugs and delivers new services around video. You can now integrate video in your mood message, you can share video in chat sessions with multiple people and you can take snapshots during a videocall to save and retrieve later. Next to that, it's now easy to share contactdata with people (I did not see that one in previous versions) and it is possible to forward calls.

It seems skype is launching new beta's now every 2 to 3 months with nice new functionalities. The last beta was at the end of march and the one before mid februari.

The question is if all these new functionalities are really used by the average "skyper". Doesn't it lead to a product that becomes complex because of the enormous amount of functionalities? For instance: I don't believe skypefind from version 3.1 is that populair and I really ask myself how many people even know of it? The beta version (watch it: "beta" so not so stable) can be downloaded from here.

SO MANY TAKEOVERS TO REPORT!!!

I've been positively surprised by the number of takeovers/acquisitions over the last months and will try to give a overview of some of them and their potential consequences:

Display advertising - Market upheaval

Wow - this must be the most explosive one. Google buys Doubleclick for 3.1 billion dollars , Yahoo buys Rightmedia, WPP buys 24/7 Real media and the in a move that I can only explain as "drive by fear of losing out" MSN buys Aquantive for a whopping 6 billion dollars!!!
That's a total of 10.4 billion dollars spend on display ad firms. It seems there is quite a consensus that display ads will pay off big time in the (near) future. Maybe seeing the success of systems like adwords and Yahoo's panama the display ad market will now move into "intelligent" bannering and get systems that are both smart in their targeting (micro-niche targeting, behavioral targeting etc) as well as that they will have smart payment systems (auction/bid system, perhaps even combined with pay for performance modules).

The only player left standing alone is Valueclick, the ad company that also owns affiliate system Commission Junction, tracking software provider (my favorite) Mediaplex and some other platforms. Who is out there to buy this one - eBay? AOL? IAC? Another "offline player"?

Web 2.0 - acquisitions continue

The most active sphere of little acuisitions is the web 2.0 sphere. Here we've also seen some interesting acquisitions

eBay has bought Stumbleupon. The acquisition rumors came already early and I'm surprised my former company wasn't able to keep the information inside - something they are usually good at. eBay also bought a turkish auction site.

Google has bought feedburner. Good acquisition I think. I also found this site with an overview of Google's "acquisition scorecard". Google has been also active in the geo-space -e.g. with the acquisition of Panoramio

And one I also wanted to mention; CBS has bought Last.fm

Twitter & Jaiku

I've been following it a bit over the last ~4,5 months and have VERY rarely really used it: Microblogging.

Until two weeks ago at Mobile Monday in the "Rode Hoed" where I saw a great presentation by Jyri Engeström from Jaiku. The event had a backchannel via Jaiku and the whole thing got me interested again in the microblogging thing. My impression so far though is that it is a great nice tool to follow people and events, but takes quite some time again - as if the overload in emails and IM isn't enough yet. I will give it a try again for the coming weeks and see if I get addicted as well or if I stay with my current conviction; nice, but I will hardly join this thing....

AdMarkt by Marktplaats launched

Today Marktplaats.nl launched their CPC/lead generation product AdMarkt in all 31 categories. AdMarkt had already launched in 5 categories as a initial test for the market. The in-house developed Admarkt is replacing Google's Adsense ads on the listing pages, and is supposed to be a better experience for both the buyers on Marktplaats, as well as opening up increased opportunities for product advertisers. AdMarkt is the first 3 ads on top of a listing page, e.g. shown in BMW.

Skype enhancements

That skype is pretty innovative is known, but the speed in which they launch new features and or new beta versions of their products keeps surprising me. And it only seems to accelerate, within three weeks they have released two new beta versions.

The new Beta has a couple of interesting features that open up new business models for skype, but also allow for many new business models for people leveraging the skype technology.

With SkypeFind skype enters the services space. Letting the users co-create a yellow pages on skype and voting for the business in the index seems like a great idea. Once adoption is high, skype could easily create featured placements or pay per call schemes to monetize this global services index.

Skype Prime is a huge business enabler - it enables users to charge another for the call at a rate specified by the "seller". You can set up any business over skype and charge per minute. Some business models jump to mind immediately; consultancy, translation, adult. It will be interesting to see what unconventional business will leverage this. There is discussion though about the take rate of 30%

Some other features were released as well, but I wanted to highlight these big two. I will try to follow this skype business eco-system. If you find any nice usages or mash-ups from skype - please let me know in the comments.

Open id & Jyte

Just a quick post on a new service - Jyte (see example below) that leverages OpenID. OpenID is an open standard for id-services, a bit comparable to what Microsoft tried with passport. A service that let's you securily log in at several sites with the same id. Great idea - now let's see if it works. I do believe that such a standard should rise - either open or by a commercial player - I get crazy of all the login's and passwords!!!

Zo net gelanceerd - Marktplaats Kaartoverzicht. Met deze nieuwe functionaliteit kun je zoeken via de kaart, op landelijk niveau maar ook op straatniveau. Leuke extra is de mogelijkheid in je buurt te zoeken - eens even kijken wat er vlakbij wordt aangeboden :)

Met deze ontwikkeling lijkt Marktplaats nog meer in te zetten op "lokaal" zoeken. Het zoeken op afstand bestond al en werd ook in de televisie reclame naar voren gehaald. En er was ook al een uitbereiding van Marktkijker (dat ook van marktplaats is) met Marktkijker Lokaal. Nu komt daar dus de kaartfunctie op Marktplaats bij.

Vertical Search - Cars

One of the predictions many have made and I definitly believe in is that we will see an explosion of vertical search engines in 2007. I will try to keep track of as many (new) launches as I can. Here's a start with the cars vertical...

Last week saw the launch of a Dutch Cars search engine with the funny name "gaspedaal.nl" (accelerator). This site is launched by the company behind vinden.nl and zoeken.nl. This follows the launch of a Cars-(search) vertical in december by Yahoo, although Yahoo Cars carries a lot of content as well. I also expect other Dutch companies to come with a Car search engine soon. Funny fact; "rempedaal.nl" (brake) was registered on february 7 by classifieds site Marktplaza which also owns classifieds vertical search engine Advertentiezoeker (thanks for the tip JK!!). Apparently vinden.nl wasn't alert enough to register this domain as well.

UPDATE: A very alert Sebastiaan Ambtman alerted me that Marktplaza is actually a partner in the project - thanks seb!

Launch event at IPAN

This evening IPAN organised a launch party at which several start-ups presented themselves. Very good to see the start-up spirit and a lot of these new webcompanies present themselves. I particularly liked the following:

Fleck - they already got a lot of coverage and of course they were present tonight at this "homeparty" for Boris and Patrick (the founders). For the people that missed the buzz around fleck's launch; fleck is a so-called annotation service. Do check out their product! Really looking forward to the social networking functions fleck will offer soon...

Leadz.nl - a nice services platform that mimicks the "old" letsbuyit.com but then for products. People can either co-shop or just put their request out so that service providers can bid on it. Nice move into services!

ToMap - also a cool new service: it allows people to find and select events on Google Maps. It is an open site and anyone can add events to the map/system. A nice new feature is that you can download a KML file of the event (to your mobile phone) which contains the location info for the mobile version of Google maps

Swoot - I also met Swoot on the innovation playground event in November and they have a great product for your browser. They have developed software that enables you to build a (branded) skin for your internet explorer but it really looks like a different browser or some kind of widget. Really nice to see and it can even adapt it's skin to the site you're browsing. Really cool innovation.

There we're a lot of other nice startups like; start12, blogads, rasasa (which I'm already a happy user of), originalsignal, 14dayz, yelloyello (social, web2.0 version of the yellow pages), watvindenwijover.nl, muziekkaart.nl, sharecare and others. Do check out their sites.

It was a nice event with a quite a good number of people. Well done event IPAN!

Picking on Yahoo

It seems in fashion to criticize Yahoo these days. They almost look like the poor little guy in class that all others pick on. Not entirely fair I think; although they need to get their act together on lot's of things, there's also a lot of great things happening at Yahoo - both internationally as well as locally.

On the one hand some things are really going wrong - the stock price is in decline, the new search ad-system panama was delayed and some peanut butter loving top managers in the company felt Yahoo needed a change.

On the other hand there are great things happening - Yahoo answers is a great success, silently following the growth pattern of PR baby Youtube. I also think Yahoo is busy with a smart acquisition strategy - buying key properties/technologies early in their development but picking out the right ones like Flickr, delicious etc. And Panama has now rolled in the US and will hit other markets really soon.

More locally here in the Netherlands Yahoo had two separate units (kelkoo and YSM) working pretty much apart and YSM was losing quite some of the big deals with publishers - which led to disappointing results for the advertisers on their network (mainly in volume). But 2007 must become a nice year; panama will roll in the Netherlands in the 1st half of the year, the Kelkoo and YSM teams are now combined under a new manager and Yahoo is starting to role new products into the Dutch market; like Yahoo Cars which just launched or the upcoming NL version of Yahoo answers.

Voor meerdere mensen was er een probleem met de RSS feed. Ik heb de feed hersteld en adviseer iedereen deze opnieuw in te stellen. Er is nu ook een speciale knop om Yecinto als feed voor je Google Homepage of My yahoo toe te voegen. Je vindt de knoppen terug in de rechter zijkant.

AOL bied 900 miljoen voor Tradedoubler

Wake-up call dat affiliate marketing een grote jongen aan het worden is in de marketing mix? Ik krijg net een persbericht binnen dat AOL een vriendelijk overnamebod op Tradedoubler heeft gedaan voor 215 SEK per aandeel. In totaal gaat de deal om een waarde van 900 miljoen dollar. Dat is een stuk meer dan de 58 miljoen dollar die anderhalf jaar geleden voor Commission Junction werd neergelegd! Betekent dit een hernieuwde interesse van AOL voor europa of zou het met name om de technologie gaan?

Is de 2e generatie nu geheel verkocht?

Met de aankoop van Youtube en de op handen zijnde verkoop van Facebook aan Yahoo (nog wel steeds een "sterk" gerucht) lijkt de gehele 2e generatie webbedrijven nu te zijn verkocht.

Waar de eerste generatie (eBay, Yahoo, Amazon, AOL, MSN en Google) nog allemaal een exit strategie via een IPO hadden (msn natuurlijk niet) is de tweede generatie gaan cashen via verkoop van het bedrijf aan een grotere partij - m.n. aan die 1e generatie.
Onder de 2e generatie versta ik de zgn. grotere web2.0 partijen; social networks zoals MySpace (verkocht aan News Corp.) en Facebook (waarschijnlijk naar Yahoo), sharing sites zoals Del.icio.us en Flickr (verkocht aan Yahoo), videosites zoals Myspace video en Youtube (naar Google) en VOIP zoals Skype (verkocht aan eBay).

Volgens mij zijn hiermee alle grote jongens uit deze 2e generatie verkocht. Het zal spannend zijn om te zien welke sites de 3e generatie zullen gaan vormen en of ze dezelfde "hypergrowth" zullen tonen.

WIE trip report: Bezoek aan Mozilla

Tijdens de "What is Easy" (WIE) trip in de US hebben we ook een bezoek gebracht aan Mozilla. Mozilla is zoals wellicht bekend de (not for profit) organisatie achter de Firefox browser. De firefox browser is een open-source project en wordt m.n. door de 70 medewerkers van Mozilla ontwikkeld. Ongeveer 80% van de code wordt door de ~35 developers van Mozilla gecreerd, 15% door partners zoals Google en Novell en de laatste 5% door de developer community van Mozilla.

De missie van mozilla wordt in ons gesprek met COO John Lilly en Community Coordinator Asa Dotzler beschreven als "keeping the web free of control". Hiermee wordt (op dit moment) neem ik aan m.n. de browsermarkt mee bedoelt.

Een aantal leuke feiten die uit het gesprek naar boven kwamen:

Het woord mozilla komt van Mosaic Killer - mosaic was de eerste browser
Firefox groeit in aantal gebruikers en marktaandeel (volgens hen op dit moment 20%) maar in een ongebruikelijke lineare manier
Het doel van mozilla is niet zozeer verder te groeien maar op z'n minst vast te houden wat ze nu aan gebruikers en marktaandeel hebben.
Mozilla staff meetings zijn publiek via het internet te volgen (video)

Binnenkort kunnen we Firefox 2 verwachten - waarschijnlijk nu nog 2 weken geduld hebben :)

Ik zelf vind dat een groot gedeelte van de kracht van Firefox in de extensies zit. Door de mogelijkheid te geven extensies te bouwen voor Firefox heeft Mozilla een aardig developer netwerk opgebouwd die met meer en meer interessante plugins komen. Zo kan mozilla de browser licht houden en toch een breed assortiment van features aanbieden. Ook bied het ondernemers de mogelijkheid dit commercieel te benutten; b.v. door een bedrijfsplugin (denk b.v. aan LinkWad (om de eigen service te promoten) of door een plugin te ontwikkelen waardoor via affiliate vergoedingen geld verdiend kan worden - b.v. deze plugin voor Amazon.

Daarnaast is Mozilla geweldig bezig met de community als het om marketing gaat. Community coordinator (mooi bescheiden- niet meteen een "manager") Asa gaf ons meerdere voorbeelden, van het eenvoudig buttons en banners op de site plaatsen, de 2 pagina's in de New York times die gezamelijk door ongeveer 10.000 gebruikers betaald/gesponsored werd en ook recentelijk de wedstrijd om een 30 sec TV reclamefilmpje voor het bedrijf te ontwerpen. Na Open-source development ook Open-source marketing. Op SpreadFirefox.com is meer te vinden.

Het bezoek was zeer interessant en ik wens de zeer sympatieke medewerkers van mozilla nog erg veel succes toe :) Spread the word!

Ik ben net teruggekomen van een interessante "trip" naar New York en San Fransico waar ik op mijn blog nog meer over zal schrijven. De trip had het thema "what is easy" waarbij we op zoek zijn gegaan naar hoe simplicity een onderscheidend concurrentie voordeel kan vormen.

De grotere advertentiesites van Nederland zijn beiden blijkbaar deze zomer bezig geweest nieuwe advertentieproducten te ontwikkelen om zo weer wat meer te kunnen verdienen :)

Marktplaats lanceerde 3 producten:

Topadvertenties - tegen een vaste prijs boven aan de pagina met producten
Admarkt - tegen een cpc prijs variabel boven aan de pagian met producten
Sponsored content - bedrijven kunnen als "expert" van een categorie een contentgedeelte invullen

Speurders lanceerde afgelopen week Rubriekstoppers - vergelijkbaar met de Topadvertenties van marktplaats maar dan tegen een lager tarief (ook minder bezoekers natuurlijk)

eBay - Google alliantie

Gister maakten eBay en Google bekend een meerjarige alliantie te hebben gesloten met elkaar. Google gaat tekstadvertenties verzorgen op alle niet-VSsites van eBay. Voor de VS had eBay al een alliantie met Yahoo. Daarnaast gaan eBay en Google elkaar steunen met pay-per-call en zal de samenwerking tussen Skype en Google talk toenemen. The Live Wave

We weten allemaal dat Google het ene na het andere product lanceert maar ook Microsoft gaat nu met het nieuwe Live platform redelijk snel. Live.com was natuurlijk al ee tijdje live maar nu rolt het ene na het andere initiatief uit. Was het vorige week shopping.live.com - een shopping site met een aantal leuke AJAX functies, alleen erg langzaam (en alleen beschikbaar in Internet Explorer). Daar is nu ook products.live.com bijgekomen - een shopping comparison site. Techcrunch schrijft er een interessant stuk over.

Cool nieuw web 2.0 initiatief

Mij net op gewezen: SayOutLoud - een nieuwe web 2.0 service die het o.a. mogelijk maakt te bloggen zonder blog. Je kunt op sayoutloud posten en het platform zorgt ervoor dat je post via o.a. Technorati e.d. de blogosphere in vliegen. Zeker het bekijken waard en volgens mij een enorm coole toevoeging aan het web 2.0 palet.

Paypal mobile nu live

Paypal mobile is nu live in de US. Uitleg over het mobiel betalen is hier te vinden. Volgens mij opent dit echt de deuren voor de connectie van offline & direct advertising. Ik zie me de advertenties in de Spits al voor me - waar een film wordt gepromoot en ik via Paypal direct mijn ticket kan kopen terwijl ik in de trein onderweg ben naar werk.

XS4all concurrent voor Skype nu ook met "Skype-out"

Het VOIP product van XS4all kan nu ook naar vaste en mobiele nummer bellen. Met deze dienst is ze een concurrent voor het Skype van eBay. Het tarief naar vaste nummers van 0.02 eurocent is gelijk aan die van Skype maar het bedrag van 0.18 om naar een mobiel nummer te bellen is een paar centen goedkoper van bij Skype. Nu eens kijken of deze lagere prijs een impact kan maken op de penetratie en het gebruik van XS4all versus die van Skype

Leuke "brainwave" over een combinatie van Yahoo en eBay op eBay Strategies.

TechnoPartner Award?

Op 8 Juni wordt er een nieuwe prijs uitgedeeld door het ministerie van economische zaken voor een een duo van Innovatief bedrijf met “Launching customer”. Juist deze Launching Customer, de eerste klant, verdient alle lof voor het risico dat hij of zij heeft gelopen om een nieuwe vinding te ondersteunen. Een beloning voor het beste duo is daarom op zijn plaats zo vind de organisatie. Inzendingen voor de prijs van 25000 euro zijn nog mogelijk volgens de site. Mijn voorlopige favoriet? Schrijf ik net over de veranderingen bij eBay - hebben we er voor marktplaats ook nog een aantal:

Marktplaats verwijderd de 200 euro grens en maakt het adverteren voor consumenten vrijwel geheel gratis

Webwereld schrijft: "Volgens directeur Oscar Diele van Marktplaats was deze situatie niet altijd even eenduidig en leidde dat nog wel eens tot discussie. In plaats hiervan gaat de populaire verkoopsite nu uit van een onderverdeling per rubriek. Grofweg geldt hierbij de overweging dat de handel tussen consumenten onderling gratis is."

Daarnaast zijn er een aantal veranderingen in het bannermanagement zoals nieuwe formaten

eBay.nl vernieuwd

Een aantal wijzigingen bij eBay Nederland deze maand:

eBay verhoogt en veranderd de prijsstructuur in Nederland per 22 februari. Het gaat weer meer lijken op de situatie voor April 2004.
Het aantal actieve items op de eBay.nl site staat nu op 981.032 items - bijna een miljoen. Het lijkt er op dat de artikelen uit de eBay winkels nu ook te vinden zijn via de standaard zoekfunctie. Voorheen konden deze artikelen alleen via de ebay-winkels site gevonden worden.

Zylom verkocht aan Real Networks

Meerdere nieuwtjes

eBay heeft 170.000 verkopers in Europa die eBay als primaire inkomsten bron hebben. Dan is er toch nog wel een eindje te gaan als je dat vergelijkt met de 724.000 in de USA.

Minder overnames door eBay dit jaar? Wel volgens CEO Meg Whitman.

Startpagina verniewd look & feel

Startpagina heeft de look & feel van de site aangepast en daarbij ook een aantal andere vernieuwingen gelanceerd. Naast een duidelijke prominentie voor de dochters, kids en online radio (!) en de keuze voor verschillende kleurtjes is de grootste aanpassing misschien terug te vinden bij de dochers. Kijk bijvoorbeeld eens bij de molen.pagina.nl dan zie je dat de url nu niet meer .pagina is maar .startpagina (via een redirect, vast de 301 (=juiste) voor de zoekmachineoptimalisatie).

Maar minstens zo interessant is de 4e kolom (aan de rechterkant van de pagina). Hier vind je de bijbehorende "sites' voor de paginadochter - prikbord (chatten), smoelenboek (profielen), nieuws (nieuws) en Markt (artikelen/advertenties). Deze laatste zorgt voor een stuk meer prominentie voor Startpagina's Paginamarkt.nl (met overigens 10730 advertenties op het moment van schrijven). Deze 4e kolom is blijkbaar in te stellen door de webmaster van de dochterpagina zelf.

iPod wint de prijs voor meest buzzable product 2005

Vanavond was er de uitreiking van de buzzawards - om buzzer weer wat meer buzzable te maken ;) - De winnaar van 2005 was iPod. Helaas waren er geen mensen van Apple om te prijs in ontvangst te nemen, natuurlijk druk druk druk door al dat succes.

Miljonairs verkopen met Jort Kelder op Marktplaats

50 Innovaties op evenement in Den Haag

Morgen vind er in het gebouw van SenterNovem een grootschalig innovatie demo evenement plaats. Dit evenement beoogt de wereld van onder andere irisscans, bluetooth, gps, spraakcomputers en onderling communicerende machines inzichtelijk en toegankelijk te maken.

Marktplaats.nl maakt bekend dat haar gebruikers vanaf vandaag gebruik kunnen maken van de Marktplaats Kentekenhulp. Kentekenhulp biedt gebruikers geheel vrijblijvend de mogelijkheid om nog sneller en eenvoudiger een autoadvertentie te plaatsen. De autorubriek is één van de populairste advertentiecategorieën op Marktplaats.nl.
Bij alle auto´s in Nederland hoort een specifiek kenteken. Als een auto een kenteken toegekend heeft gekregen, blijft dit kenteken altijd bij de auto horen. Gebruikers die gebruik maken van Kentekenhulp voeren bij het aanmaken van een advertentie het kenteken in en automatisch worden de belangrijkste kenmerken van de auto herkend en in de advertentie ingevuld. Aantal veranderingen op Speurders

Speurders voert een aantal veranderingen op haar site door zo is te lezen. Gebruikers krijgen zelf de mogelijkheid om email bevestigingen aan en uit te zetten en sorteren op prijs is verbeterd. Ook zijn er een aantal belangrijke details veranderd bij het verlengen van advertenties. Grappig :)

Overigens zie ik ook dat Speurders een erotiek categorie is begonnen - de lancering hiervan is me even ontgaan. Weet iemand wanneer deze live is gegaan?

RSS/XML feed link toegevoegd

Vanaf nu is Martijn's blog ook gemakkelijk via een rss/xml feed van feedburner te volgen. Feedburner levert overigens zeer interessante tools voor weblogs en het "syndicaten" van je blog feeds. Bijvoorbeeld de "buzzboost", de "headline animator" zoals hieronder of de "feedcount" zoals die in mijn rechternavigatie te vinden is. De teller van deze feedcount staat overigens nog op 0 (nul) en ik hoop dat jullie me helpen deze naar een leuker getal te krijgen! :)

eBay / Marktplaats ook in zee met Selectvracht

Na de samenwerking met TPG post zijn eBay en Marktplaats nu ook een samenwerking aangegaan met Seelectvracht. De bedoeling van de partnership is het verkopers op de twee sites nog makkelijker te maken de artikelen op de juiste manier naar de kopers te krijgen. Op deze pagina's (deze en deze) is meer informatie te vinden. Voordeel van selectvracht is dat ze de pakketjes thuis komen ophalen - ze zijn daarintegen wel duurder.

Marktplaats geeft vanaf vanmiddag ook de mogelijkheid aan verkopers om communicatie via Skype te accepteren. Vier dagen na de bekendmaking van de overname door eBay lijkt Marktplaats hiermee de eerste eBay dochter te zijn ter wereld met een Skype integratie. Dit is eenzelfde model als wat kleintjesmarkt al langere tijd aanbied. Kleintjesmarkt lijkt hier dan ook direct op te reageren met een interessante actie - gratis doorplaatsen in de krant! Het lijkt er op dat speurders hiermee nog een (nieuwe) interessante strijd tussen de kranten ontlokt (telegraaf tegen wegener). Not so new News

Ik heb in de afgelopen week een paar feitjes niet gepubliceerd die ik toch niemand wil onthouden:

Marktplaats doet 2 miljard aan verkopen per jaar - meer dan de omzet van alle nederlandse web-retailers bij elkaar. Het leukste bij dit feitje vind ik eigenlijk een combinatie van twee andere artikelen - de inschatting van de waarde van Marktplaats door Michiel Frackers uit November en het feit dat eBay Inc.ongeveer 10% van de omzet op de site als eigen inkomsten heeft. Combineer die feiten (225 miljoen euro aankoopsom en een potentiele (!) 10% van 2 miljard (=200 miljoen)) en je hebt een zeer interessant plaatje (nou zal die 10% in nederland nog niet zo snel gehaald worden).
Ook interessant - de helft van wat op Marktplaats komt wordt blijkbaar ook verkocht.

eBay koopt weer advertentiesite - Opus Forum nu onderdeel van de Kijiji familie

eBay koopt opnieuw een advertentiesite in Europa. Het Duitse Opus Forum is door eBay gekocht en zal waarschijnlijk bij de Kijiji familie gaan horen. In het afgelopen jaar heeft eBay al meerdere "classified sites" toegevoegd aan haar portfolio; naast onze Nederlandse Marktplaats zijn ook Rent.com, Gumtree, Loquo en Mobile door eBay gekocht.

Ondanks alle geruchten (o.a. door mijzelf) en weblogs die over een variant van paypal door Google spraken ontkent Eric Schmidt dat Google zich in die "person-to-person" markt gaat begeven. Hij houdt wel de opties voor andere betalingssystemen open.

eBay lanceert Open source codebase

eBay heeft vandaag op haar jaarlijkse ontwikkelaarsconferentie de lancering van een open source codebase bekend gemaakt met een bijbehorende website:

Hiermee kunnen ontwikkelaars zelf applicaties ontwikkelen en met grote vrijheid experimenteren met nieuwe functionaliteiten.

Google ook in Vraag & Aanbod? Nieuwe feiten...

Hyped schreef al op 26 Mei over het gerucht/idee dat Google ook wel eens binnenkort met een vraag en aanbod site (classifieds-site) zou kunnen komen aangezien ze een aantal interessante domeinnamen hebben geregistreerd. De nieuwe geruchten rond de voorspelde Google "Wallet" of "Payments" hebben ook deze voorspelling naar boven gehaald. Marketwatch van eTrade meldt het volgende (in het Engels):

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - A Google "Wallet" sounds sexier than a Google classifieds or listings business.
So, it's no wonder that there's been so much chatter in the press about the possibility that Google will launch a payment system that would trump eBay's (EBAY, Trade) PayPal service.
Even Wall Street analysts took to dissecting the possibility Monday, resulting in more near-term negative headlines favoring eBay short sellers than anything concrete about a Google payment service. Not surprisingly, Google stayed mum (and likely amused) throughout all of this speculative reporting.
But it's not so much a payment system that presents an imminent threat to eBay. In my opinion, it's a Google listing business, and/or classified business that poses a real danger to eBay.
In fact, I'd go as far as to say that if Google really wanted to get at the heart of eBay's business, it would simply turn on a classifieds or listings business.
After all, it wouldn't be a big leap for Google to let users list an item for sale much as they post an advertisement. (That's one reason why this column posited the Google vs. eBay battle back in 2003: )
By a listings or classifieds service, I mean listings by individuals of their one-off items, or listings of items from small or medium sized merchants. I don't believe it matters if Google chooses not to get into auctions. EBay would still feel the pain from a Google listings business in a fixed-price format. That's because 30% of eBay's gross merchandise sales are done in fixed-price formats.
Here are a few reasons why I think a Google classifieds business poses a greater imminent threat to eBay than a payment business: A listings business is easier to implement; it's more in line with Google's core business, and helps fill up Google's local service listings. Listings on a local level have a tailwind to boot.
Let's start the easy implementation. Google already has an automated system that lets users post their advertisements on Google's network. I'd imagine integrating and getting traction for a payment service is more difficult than extending an automated, self-service feature to individuals or merchants who want to sell one-off items, or highlight certain items for sale.
For instance, I conducted a search for "Parlee bikes San Francisco" on Google. If there was a listing for one of the high-end bikes at a steep discount, I'd be inclined to click on that listing to buy the bike, rather than click on the ad and have to peruse through the entire shop to find it.
A classified/listings business would also be a smart and easy way to fill up Google's Local search-results pages with advertisements from local merchants, and listings of goods from residents. For now, Google's Local page says, "Find local businesses and services on the Web." It would be easy to add a line saying: "place your items for sale here."
I'm certain that if Google had a local listings business my friends would consider listing their antiques, cars or sundry items they may have laying on Google's service, especially if Google didn't charge for listings, but only for a completed transaction.
By adding this option for individuals and merchants, Google could also expand the number of keyword terms that it can sell.
Today, if I search for "Parlee bike San Francisco," I only get algorithmic results on Google's main search page, but no sponsored links. I get no listings whatsoever on Google's Local page. (Note: this listing is different from above because "bike" is not plural.)
But if Google had a listings service, a merchant could highlight that one product, or an individual could sell that one product, and it could be found with that keyword string. In other words, Google expands its inventory. And, that's exactly what Google needs to do as the classified business quickly shifts online.
About $1.7 billion in classified advertising went online in 2004, according to the NAA, the Newspaper Association of America. But about $16.6 billion in classified advertisements went into traditional newspapers last year.
Finally, an online payment system isn't exactly an easy sell to consumers. Consumers "like cash transactions," said Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist. There have been "no requests" from Craigslist users for an electronic payment system.
Clearly, an online payment business isn't needed or essential in the local marketplace, if Craigslist is a guide. And an online payment system hasn't gotten much traction beyond eBay's platform. Back in 2004, about 33% of PayPal transaction payment volume was done off eBay. As of the first quarter, it had dropped down to 29%. The company said that change was in part due to an increase in its auction business overseas during that period.
Think of it this way: Are you really in need of an alternative payment system when you're on Amazon.com, which has its own Amazon.com (AMZN, Trade) Visa card? I certainly don't feel drawn to using eBay's PayPal when I download songs from Apple's (AAPL, Trade) iTunes or if I buy on Overstock.com (OSTK, Trade). My credit cards will do. Even when I buy on eBay, I don't think of using PayPal as my first payment mechanism unless the merchant demands it.
I am not saying that an online payment service won't one day be large, and that eBay isn't successful rolling this out off its platform. At eBay's analyst day recently, the company said the PayPal market opportunity is $301 billion, on a global basis, according to a Smith Barney note. The PayPal fees also represent about 25% of eBay's sales. And, eBay generated nearly a quarter of a billion dollars in revenue from this business from $6.2 billion in gross merchandise value traded using the PayPal feature back in the first quarter.
Clearly, if Google were to get into this business, it's not good news for eBay, especially if Google waives the fees sellers pay to facilitate transactions using a Google "Wallet" or whatever name they come up with.
But if I were to bet, I'd put odds on Google gearing up for a classified/listings business first. Only once that is set up would it eventually launch a payment system.
When eBay bought PayPal back in 2001, Wall Street saw it as a sign that the online marketplace operator was essentially saying that its auction business was slowing down. If Google were to launch a payment service business, it would suggest to me that Google, in like vein, would be admitting that its advertising business is slowing down.

Naast alle redenen die hierboven zijn genoemd zou dit natuurlijk ook een interessant platform voor Google zijn als "services"(diensten) alternatief naast de Product Search Engine Froogle.

Wellicht ziet Google partijen zoals eBay/Craigslist/Marktplaats als Product & Services search engines - een punt waar ik enigzins wel in kan komen al is een platform als eBay meer dan alleen dat; ook de transacties vinden daadwerkelijk op de site plaats. Dit in tegenstelling tot de "classifieds" sites zoals Marktplaats. Nu dan ook met shopping.com in de arm kan het een leuke strijd worden tussen eBay (Inc.) en Google.

Google ook in de strijd om dieper de shopping market te betreden?

Gevonden op tweakers; Google zou zich beraden op het lanceren van een betaaldienst genaamd "Google Wallet". Genoemde bronnen zijn de wall street journal en search engine watch.

Naast de additionele inkomstenstroom denk ik dat Google het met name ook zal doen voor het argument wat de WSJ hier noemt:

"Beyond a possible additional revenue stream, an electronic-payment service could give Google more insight into the effectiveness of its core advertising service. Google might be able to better track whether users who click on search-related advertisements make purchases from the advertiser."

Adverteren hoeft geen kostenpost te zijn zolang je kunt meten dat er direct inkomsten uit voortvloeien - 1 van de redenen van het huidige succes van Google Adwords; de online adverteerders van DSB, Wehkamp en eBay leggen natuurlijk niet voor niets de enorme budgetten neer voor deze manier van adverteren.
Door de mogelijkheden van het meten van je omzet (gerelateerd aan je Google adwords uitgaven) te vergroten zal het steeds inzichtelijker worden hoe je geld kunt verdienen door het in Adwords te besteden :) Een dubbelslag dus - een nieuwe omzetmarkt en een product dat je "core" markt verder kan laten groeien.

Het lijkt dat de strijd die enige tijd geleden begon op de Zoekmarkt zich nu aan het uitbreiden is naar "Shopping Search" zoals al in een eerder bericht weergegeven.

Nieuwe functie op Marktplaats

Ze zijn toch wel hard bezig bij Marktplaats - in het begin van de week nog een nieuwe interface voor het zoeken op de site, nu een zogenaamde "Rich text editor" zodat je je teksten wat mooier kunt maken zonder HTML-kennis. De vraag is nu natuurlijk "what's next?"

eBay koopt Shopping.com & shopping search in NL

eBay koopt Shopping.com voor 620 miljoen dollar. Strategisch zeer interessante koop om diverse redenen;

Shopping search heeft met name betrekking op nieuwe producten en eBay lijkt zich hier dus meer op te gaan focussen.
Shopping search is een niche in de search markt - eBay maakt hiermee dus een stap in een nieuwe richting
Er zijn redelijk wat initiatieven gaande in deze markt en daar stapt eBay dus nu ook in.

Met name op dat laatste is ook interessant in Nederland. Yahoo heeft Kelkoo gekocht en een Yahoo.nl gelanceerd met een shopping kanaal (gevuld door Kelkoo), er gaan geruchten dat vergelijk.nl door Ilse Media gekocht gaat worden (nadat ze zelf consumerdesk hebben gekocht) en Kieskeurig gaat allerlei allianties aan in nieuwe markten (vakanties). Daarnaast zal Google binnenkort ook wel met een Nederlandse Froogle komen en het zal nu ook wachten zijn voordat eBay met shopping.com verder internationaal gaat uitbreiden. En dan hebben we het nog helemaal niet gehad over de meta-search engines zoals veilingkijker & co (hier en hier).

Tips & Trucs rond omhoogbellen op Speurders

Zoals velen wel weten hebben Marktplaats, Speurders en Marktplaza een functionaliteit waarbij je via een betaald telefoonnummer je advertentie weer boven aan de lijst van aanbiedingen gezet kunt krijgen. Kosten hiervoor liggen rond de 1.15 euro. Waar het bij Marktplaats niet mogelijk is je advertentie te kopieren en daarmee een nieuwe maar identieke advertentie bovenaan de lijst te krijgen kan dit bij speurders wel. Dit betekent dus dat je de kosten kunt ontduiken door gewoon via "Mijn advertentie" een kopie opnieuw aan te bieden.

Voordeel voor de verkoper: je staat nu twee keer in de lijst en daarvan 1x gratis opnieuw bovenaan :)

Nadeel is voor de kopers natuurlijk het aantal dubbele aanbiedingen en daarmee vervuiling van de site.

Voorbeeld: Ik bied een auto aan op maandag. Op woensdag is deze al een stuk naar beneden geschoven in de lijst met auto's. I.p.v een telefoonnummer te bellen ga ik naar mijn advertenties en kopieer ik de advertentie. Deze plaats ik opnieuw. Op woensdag staat mijn gekopieerde advertentie bovenaan en mijn oude verderop in de lijst - dubbel succes :)

PS In sommige categorieen werkt dit niet - b.v. in woningen.

Marktplaats lanceert een affiliate programma. Daarmee hebben we een kleine lijst van spelers binnen de affiliate programma's rond vraag en aanbod. Een kleine vergelijking:
